‘A fully immersive music expierence’
Our first solo event
Our inaugural Just Mates event held in July was a long, long time in the making. We had always wanted to do an event like this, it was just a matter of finding the time, the right place, and the right people to play it and bring it to life.
It’s safe to say we were absolutely stoked with how it turned out, in fact it was so nice we had to do it twice.
The Venue was a small film studio right in the heart of Grey Lynn. Nice and central, easy to access, and had all the stuff in the roof we needed to rig our lights and cameras.
Our first event was on July 1st, after scoping out the venue we thought we would pack it out with 90-100 people, so thats the target we set for ticket sales. Selling tickets to your first event is always a tricky one as you’re coming in as the new guy that people don’t know yet, they dont know what end product they’re going to end up with whereas a known promoter selling a gig on the same night they will.
Sales started off really well, in our first night we sold over 30% of our allocation which we were stoked with. The sales obviously slowed down from there, and over the next 3 weeks we managed to sell out the gig! A sell out on our first event was huge and we were very happy with the outcome. We eneded up having people messaging us privately trying to get access to the event because they’d missed out - what a great feeling!
A huge success
We ended up packing out the venue with about 100 people who got down and dirty in the boiler room. We had 3 DJ’s play opening sets, some of which it was there first time playing to a crowd. They all smashed it and it was awesome to give them a platform to develop their skills on. Once the sun had set, the room started to fill up and DJ duo Not Lauren (composed of Jess & Carrie) kicked off the recorded sets with a banging house set. The girls did awesome, check out their video above.
We then had Matty The Friend (Mattheu Pong) come through and absolutely tear it up. Matty has lots of performing experience and really got the crowd engaged in his performance and it shows. Again check out his set above.
We then transitioned from House to Drum and Bass, time to get sweaty.
Sless (Daniel Slessor) kicked it off with a euphoric set full of bangers and some originals too. Sless had everyone skanking out and having a great time. Check out Sless’ video above.
Finally to close out the night, jump up DJ Ali B (Ali Bahmanpour) stepped up and annihilated the room with his energetic non stop hour of power. Ali brought a great energy to the room with his set “chopping it up like a sushi chef'“. Check out his video above.
